OrthAlign’s Lantern Hip Wins FDA Nod

OrthAlign has earned U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for its Lantern Hip handheld device for direct total hip replacement with the patient in the supine position.
 
The hip indication is the latest addition to the company’s Lantern platform. It joins existing applications for total, partial, and revision knee replacement.
 
Lantern Hip features next-gen accelerometers and gyroscopes to offer surgeons real-time navigation for cup positioning, as well as restoration of leg length and offset. The tech allows individualized cup positioning in multiple planes—functional pelvic, anterior pelvic, and coronal—with live pelvic tracking.
 
OrthAlign said Lantern Hip removes the need for pre-op imaging or capital equipment and is compatible with most implants. This, according to the company, makes it an ideal choice for the Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) setting.
